Iablokov, Iurii Evgen'evich
Iurii Evgen'evich was interviewed twice by Irina Ostrovskaia, in August 2004 and March
2005. He talks in depth about his upbringing in a former noble family in Riazan, reflecting
on the tensions between their old-world values and the Soviet environment. He comments on
his father's letters from prison, and on their impact on the family. One of the most
interesting aspects of the interviews concerns the formation of Iurii's views and
personality during the war and after 1945, when he was part of the occupying Soviet troops
in Germany. He reflects on his growing sense of individuality and internal opposition to
the Stalinist regime. He also talks about his involvement in the opposition student circles
at Moscow State University.
